Breast Enlargement

Most women equate breast size with the size of their bra cup.  However, this is not an accurate measurement in a clinical context.  Just as a 34-B Olga and a 34-B Victoria's Secret bra will fit differently, the request to move from a 34-B to a full C must be translated into clinical terms.  No one can promise you a specific cup size following augmentation, but Dr. Pollard does promise a change in the size and shape of your breast that looks natural and complements the rest of your body proportions nicely.

When augmenting the breasts, small incisions are usually made in one of three locations:  underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola, or within the armpit.  A pocket is created into which an implant is inserted.

How do I prepare for a breast augmentation consultation?

First, visit http://www.breastimplantsafety.org/ for information regarding the types of implants that are available, as well as the risks and possible complications. On the day of your consultation, bring in pictures of breasts that reflect your views about size: what is too large, too small, and just right. Try to select pictures that approximate your own body frame, shape and size, height and weight.

Also, it would be helpful if you bring a bra of the approximate size that you wish to be. This should be a soft-sided bra with no padding. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to place implants of various sizes into the bra to see how each looks while you are fully clothed.

How I will maintain a healthy breast after augmentation?

You should perform monthly breast self-examinations and have a yearly examination by a physician. The American Cancer Society recommends that you start your breast mammograms at the age of 40. If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult with your doctor to decide when the first mammogram should be taken.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

If you are a smoker, stop smoking well in advance of the surgery.  Maintain good health and avoid excessive exposure to sunlight, as well as the light from tanning beds.  Stop taking all aspirin-containing medications, Vitamin E, and all herbs at least 14 days prior to surgery.  Be sure to discuss with Dr. Pollard and the anesthesiologist all medications that you have been taking.

How does Dr. Pollard evaluate the need for breast augmentation surgery?

Dr. Pollard will discuss your medical history with you and obtain information regarding medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments that you have received, in addition to your breast health history. She will consider such factors as the size and shape of your breasts, the quality of your skin, and placement of the nipple and areola. If your breasts are sagging, a breast lift may be recommended in conjunction with augmentation.

Will I be able to become pregnant after this surgery?

Pregnancy can alter breast size in an unpredictable way and could affect the long-term results of your breast augmentation. There is no evidence, however, that breast implants will affect pregnancy or your ability to breastfeed.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

You are a good candidate for breast augmentation if you believe that your breasts are too small and you feel self-conscious about it; if your breasts have become smaller and lost their firmness after you had children; if weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts; or if one of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.

What type of implants will be used?

Dr. Pollard has significant experience with the saline-filled implants and will recommend the appropriate size and profiles to best enhance your body image.

When will I see the results?

You will see the results immediately. There is, however, a component of settling and swelling that will affect the final appearance of your breasts. It usually takes between three and six months to see the final result.

In Philadelphia, breast enlargement surgery may be performed in a hospital or in a qualified surgical center. Dr. Pollard performs surgery at  Lankenau Hospital, Bryn Mawr Hospital, or the  Delaware Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center, a licensed surgery center noted for its high level of safety and professionalism.

I do not live in Pennsylvania. How many days will I need to spend near Philadelphia following my breast enlargement surgery?

Dr. Pollard would like for your to remain in the Philadelphia area for a minimum of seven days following your breasat enlargement procedure.
